The Great Disruption

This seems a fascinating concept - the book of this name by Paul Gilding, an environmental economist, refers to the time that Mother Nature and Father Greed will both hit the wall. Our economy can't continue in its present form when the environment can't support it.

" The coming decades will see loss, suffering, and conflict as our planetary overdraft is paid; however, they will also bring out the best humanity can offer: compassion, innovation, resilience, and adaptability. Gilding tells us how to fight-and win-what he calls The One Degree War to prevent catastrophic warming of the earth, and how to start today".


The book does have an optimistic view, apparently! I listened to a radio interview with the author today. When asked how he personally tried to lessen his footprint, he spoke about using and needing less "stuff". I love the way his family does birthdays: the birthday child chooses an "experience" that the whole family embark on, such as a picnic or trip to the zoo, instead of receiving more "stuff". What a lovely way to re-work birthdays.
